I'd say he is grappling with the life dealt to him. Loneliness seems to be a part of it, but generally, all the things that are out of his control that seem to go wrong. It's frustrating, but being a decent fellow, he tries to keep his head above water, taking life as it comes—cats and all.
My guess would be loneliness it doesn't sound like he's necessarily very angry. But the mention of two chairs that obviously only one will be occupied at this point since he's divorced seems to point to loneliness.
